7 Synod: who we are We represent 463 Church of England parishes in Essex and East London We represent about 50,000 lay people on electoral rolls We represent 500 clergy We represent 5 bishops We seek, together, to discern the mission God has for His Church in this place Martin starts here

12 How We Do It Overall approach to business Speaking at Synod Debates
Motions Amendments Voting Presentations Overall approach Discuss and agree as appropriate on matters of business in atmosphere of openness and tolerance Members should feel free to express opinions and seek information – this is a transparent process Chair keeps order and generally aims to keep tone light and encouraging; we take our business very seriously but we don’t take ourselves too seriously Speaking at Synod Members welcome to approach Chair before meeting for help and advice Members called by Chair to speak; give name and Deanery; time limits Debates: Motions and Amendments SO govern how debates are conducted. Seek advice from Office or Chair on amendments before meeting. Speaker/mover; debate; summing up Voting Normally show of hands; can be by ballot Can be by Houses Presentations SO suspended Opportunity for comments/questions

Membership is as for Bishop’s Council except for those who are remunerated officers Determines & monitors all policy relating to finance including clergy numbers, stipends, budgets, grant-making Trustees of the CBDF company and charity that sits behind the Synod AN
