2 A Bit of a Background Virginia Woolf was never formally educated though through her access to her fathers library she developed a love for literature and writing. Suffered from various nervous breakdowns over the course of her life- partially attributed to sexual abuse by her half brothers After her mother died in 1895 After her father died in 1904 After her marriage in 1913/1914 The Woolf family purchased a hand printing press as a form of therapy for her and she used it to print her own stories and eventually the Hogarth Press became a business

3 A Room of One’s Own “One can only give one's audience the chance of drawing their own conclusions as they observe the limitations, the prejudices, the idiosyncrasies of the speaker” Brings awareness to the position and rights of women in the 19th century and the prejudices held by those who are the leaders in media. “It is equally useless to ask what might have happened if Mrs Seton and her mother and her mother before her had amassed great wealth and laid it under the foundations of college and library, because, in the first place, to earn money was impossible for them, and in the second, had it been possible, the law denied them the right to possess what money they earned “
