1 Brain: the first known computer virus for MS-DOS
The First Virus How it was transmitted: Back then computer viruses were only able to spread through floppy disk. Now they are easily spread through and downloads. Inside the code: The code targeted the floppy disk boot sector, replacing the original boot and making 7kb of space unavailable. Inside the code was Amjad and Basit’s names, address and a phone number to reach them. The Inventors: Basit (Left) and Amjad(Right) Avid. Two brothers who currently own a company called Brain Telecommunications named after the Virus. Both brothers are living in Pakistan. Brain: the first known computer virus for MS-DOS Released in 1986, The two brothers realized that DOS was vulnerable, so they wrote the code to show its vulnerability. The code was not intentionally malicious, unlike most of todays viruses. Significance: This was the start of the concept of Viruses, and how to exploit the system, leading to a problem that still plagues computers 25 years later The Controversy: Who’s to blame for vulnerabilities? Is it Amjad and Basit’s fault for exploiting the vulnerability, or is it Microsofts fault because they didn’t create a safe operating system.
