CHAPTER 3: FORCES 3.3 THE THIRD LAW OF MOTION
2
Newton’s Third Law of Motion
describes action-reaction pairs When one object exerts a force on a second object, the second one exerts a force on the first that is equal in strength and opposite in direction. flickr.com
3
Action and reaction forces act on DIFFERENT objects!
Even though these forces are equal, they are NOT balanced because they act on different objects.
4
Describe the action – reaction forces of a swimmer.

5
Momentum The product of an object’s mass and velocity.
The symbol for momentum is p. The units of measurement are kg x m/s
6
Net force on an object can be calculated by dividing its change in momentum by the time over which the change occurs.
7
Law of Conservation of Momentum
The momentum of an object cannot be changed, but can be transferred to another object. flickr.com
