1 Two Person Positioning

2 Goals of Two Person Positioning
To put us in the best position to make the calls that allow us to keep the game safe and fair. To work as a TEAM to cover all areas of the field efficiently and consistently.

3 Role of the Officials SAFETY FAIRNESS FUN
YAL page 9 of 48-pix out? Activity How do we achieve these 3 roles

4 Two Person System Positioning
Two Person Positioning Table Side Official Should be the more experienced of the team Will run the Coaches/Captains Meeting Will discuss responsibilities with the Timer and Scorer Far Side Official May be the less experienced of the team Will participate in all pre-game discussions and meetings Once the game begins the officials have the same duties throughout the game, they will work together as a team to assure the game is administered safely and fairly. Two Person System Positioning Note: Officials may rotate sides after every 2 or 3 goals. If working with a very inexperienced official, rotating may be too challenging at first, so this is not a mandatory procedure. Discuss this with your partner.

5 Areas of Responsibilities
Officials Lead to the Right, Trail to the Left Covers her whole sideline and end line Shared Area These lines are flexible!

6 To Start the Game Shared Area
The table side official will count all players to assure the correct number of players are on the field. Shared Area The official on the far side will administer the opening draw.

7 Boundary Responsibilities
Official 1 Official2

8 A ball may be played in the air outside the plane of the line.
Boundaries The boundary is called when the player possessing the ball steps on or over the line, or when the ball touches the ground on or outside the line. A ball may be played in the air outside the plane of the line. A player may NOT play from out of bounds, including playing without the ball. Activity : compare this boundary rule to other sports (FH and VB may play standing OB!) What does the bottom right box mean in the game of women’s Lacrosse? (going out of bounds for advantage- give a few examples)

9 Boundaries Compare – Boundary Lines IN or out? (VB,FH,BB,Soccer)
Note: other sports BB, soccer, field hockey, VB. Activity: Discuss other sports and their boundary lines being in or out. (officials of other sports can relate) Compare – Boundary Lines IN or out? (VB,FH,BB,Soccer)

10 Boundaries When a shot or deflected shot goes out of bounds, the player who is in bounds and closest to the BALL when it crosses the line is awarded the ball. Comment on the fact that the shot can rebound over a sideline also.(same rule applies) It may also bounce off a player and still be a shot.

11 Restarting the Boundaries
Play is restarted 2-meters directly in from where the ball crossed boundary line. Other players directly involved in the play will maintain their relative position to the ball and sideline. The player restarting with the ball shall have 1-meter of free space around them.

12 Boundaries When the Ball crosses the end line and:
GK When the Ball crosses the end line and: The GK is closest player to the ball when her team is awarded the ball and She is in her goal circle She is awarded possession and may remain in her Goal Circle to restart play.

13 Restarting Fouls near the Boundary
Move the ball in 4 Meters from the boundary Administer Penalty (Offender, Others) Reposition yourself before Restarting Note: Boundary violation 2 meters Fouls at the boundary 4 meters

14 The Draw

15 The Draw A Draw is taken to start each half and restart after each goal. Draw Rules Three players from each team are allowed between the Restraining Lines including the two players taking the draw. Centers ( players taking the draw) shall “toe the line”

16 Draw Set Up With the crosse open to a teams Goalie, the right side of the stick will be the bottom of the draw. Players may stand on either side of the line Crosses will be held in the air, the entire stick above hip level The sticks shall be parallel above the center line Demo: stick set-up and player options at DRAW- see note Demonstrate how to determine the “right” side of a plastic crosse head on the draw set- up and how the players can go to either side of the stick

17 Help Hint: Proper Stick Set Up
Have the players stand with their back to their goalie with their stick open (the pocket) to their goalie. Have each of the centers drop their sticks to their right hand side. Now hold the heads of the crosses together and have the players move to the side of their stick they want to draw from. Draw video is on the central hub. Tip: for additional review-Draw video is on Central Hub

18 Draw Rules Players may not move, except for their heads, until the whistle The first motion of the draw must be UP The Ball must go above both players heads No other players shall cross into the center circle or over the restraining line before the whistle There may not be more than 6 players between the restraining lines until possession has been gained by one team

19 Draw Responsibilities
ox Off1 ox ox ox GK GK o x ox ox The official setting up the draw is responsible for the observing the draw and as much as possible, the two other sets of players out side of the draw circle. The 2nd official is responsible for the two restraining lines and observing for any early entry. xo ox ox ox Off2

20 Critical Scoring Area Responsibilities
RL violations TRAIL Explain that the Trail is responsible for OFF-BALL fouls in this area. The Lead is ON-BALL LEAD

21 Responsibilities in the CSA
Lead On-ball fouls Shooting Space on your side of the arc Goal Circle activity Back boundary and side boundary Off-ball fouls on your side of arc Trail Shooting Space on Trail half of arc Off-ball fouls (picks, 3 sec., false starts, dangerous propel or follow through) Restraining Line Watch the Shooter After the Shot Tip: go back to the last slide and clarify the duties of either official and where on the graphic they might be looking for each responsibility above.

22 LEAD Positioning Tangent Quadrants 2 3 1 4
The Lead’s purpose of movement is to see the ball and space between the ball carrier and her defenders Two approaches to proper positioning: Tangent Quadrants Use what works best for you 2 3 These are two guiding techniques that can be used to understand the positioning of the Lead around the ARC. Two ways to learn it. 1 4

23 LEAD Tangent Positioning
Position yourself on a 90degree tangent with the ball. As the ball goes HIGH on the far side of the arc, the Official moves to a HIGH tangent

24 LEAD Tangent Positioning
Again: Position your self at a 90 degree tangent with the ball. Use white board and slide the ball around the arc and then slide the official to 90 degrees. When the ball rolls the GC towards the official, she passes below the ball for the tangent

25 LEAD Quadrant Positioning
2 3 Quadrants show the same positioning but with a different learning technique. Ball in 4, official in 1, ball in 3, official in 2 or 90 degrees to ball 1 4

26 LEAD Quadrants 2 3 Ball in 2, official in 1 or 90 degrees to the ball. 1 4

27 LEAD Quadrants 2 3 1 4

28 Transition Trail to Lead Stay ahead of and outside the ball
Position your body to keep play and players in your vision Maintain the “View” of the play action to CSA Lead to Trail Count players ahead of you Stay up with play, don’t “get there when you get there” Anticipate where the play is going

29 Responsibilities in Transition
Lead to Trail The handout will review what the trail is thinking and doing as they advance down the field – The Trail is NOT looking at the ball carrier if they are on the other side of the field. But will pay attention to the ball if it transitions down their side of the field. Trail to Lead Handout: NEW TRAIL and what am I doing?

30 Transition Official 1 Offcial2

31 Restart Guidelines LEAD restarts in the CSA
Officials always restarts their side and back boundary Restart on your “third” of the field Know when to release partner Make eye contact with partner before restarts

32 Restarts Each Official should Restart Their side of the field
Their CSA Suggestion: take out the vinyl field or use this slide and call a few fouls in each 1/3rd and ask who should restart.

33 Thirds of the Field Shared Midfield Space
Suggestion: Using the vinyl field (white board) simulate a call and a ‘release’ of a partner for the restart. Put one close to CSA and re ask the class.

34 Restarts X Trail Official can Restart in Midfield
To allow LEAD to get “ahead” Off 1 X Explain the ‘Hand-off’ and when it is NOT done. (CSA or sometimes inside the RL on the attacking end – pre-game) Off 2
