1 Bell ringer 1. Explain the difference between the vertical line test and the horizontal line test. 2. When will you need to restrict the domain of a function? Give an example of a function that requires a restriction. 3. Which Parent Functions on the poster beside the TV have inverse functions without restricting the domain? (Remember the cubic picture isn’t perfect.)

3 Classwork -- Find your Partner
Follow the directions on your card to fill in your table. Find the classmate who has the inverse function. This is your partner. Introduce yourself and both of you see Mrs. Leahy. Glue down your tables on the paper Mrs. Leahy gives you. Remember to write your names on your paper. Label the table you glued on the left f (x). Label the table you glued on the right f -1 (x). Plot the points you have on your graph. Each of you should use a different color for your function. Determine the equation of your function. If you need help, see Mrs. Leahy. Complete the line or curve for your graphical representation of your function. Draw the line y = x. Are f (x) and f -1 (x) reflections over that line? If not, fix it. Classwork -- Find your Partner

13 Classwork 1. f(x) = 3x + 10 f(x) = 𝑥 −1 𝑥+5 f(x) = 4 −𝑥2
Find the domain and range of each function. Then, find the inverse algebraically, restricting the domain if necessary. 1. f(x) = 3x + 10 f(x) = 𝑥 −1 𝑥+5 f(x) = 4 −𝑥2 f(x) = (x – 2)2 f(x) = 2x – 3

14 homework 1. f(x) = -2x2 + 5 2. f(x) = 𝑥−4 f(x) = 4 𝑥 4. f(x) = -5x
Find the domain and range of each function. Then, find the inverse algebraically, restricting the domain if necessary. 1. f(x) = -2x2 + 5 2. f(x) = 𝑥−4 f(x) = 4 𝑥 4. f(x) = -5x 5. f(x) = 4x – 3

15 Exit ticket Explain the process of finding the inverse of a function algebraically.
