Definitions: Function – Relationship for which there is exactly one value of the dependent variable for each value of the independent variable in the domain. Our objective today is to work with functions that are defined algebraically, graphically, numerically, or verbally.

Definitions: Algebraically – Using an equation to represent the function. Graphically – Using a graph to represent the function. Numerically – Using a table to represent the function. Verbally – Writing a paragraph to represent the function.

Definitions: Mathematical Models – Functions that are used to make predictions and interpretations in the real world.

Classwork: People who buy houses usually get a loan to pay for most of the house and pay on the resulting mortgage each month. Suppose you get a $50,000 loan and pay it back at $ per month with an interest rate of 12% per year (1% per month). Your balance, B dollars, after n monthly payments is given by the equation: B=50000(1.01n) /0.01(1 – 1.01n)

Classwork: Make a table of your balances at the end of each 12 months for the first 10 years of the mortgage. To save time use Excel. How many months will it take you to pay off the entire mortgage? How did you get your answer.

Classwork: have been made, half the original
True or False: “After half the payments have been made, half the original balance remains to be paid.” Does your conclusion agree with your table? Give the domain and range of this function. Explain why the domain contains only integers.
