Islam is an Arabic word that means "surrender" or "submission," This implies that believers fully accept and surrenders to God’s will

7 Islam Unlike Christianity, Buddhism, and Judaism Islam is not named for a person Allah is the Arabic translation of the word God Allah is the NOT the name of God in Islam Islam believe in the same god as Judaism and Christianity

8 Belief in the Books of Islam
The Qu’ran (Koran) lists 5 revelations that Muslims accept in their original form: The Scrolls – revealed to Abraham The Psalms – revealed to David The Torah – revealed to Moses The Gospel – revealed to Jesus The Qu’ran – revealed to Muhammad In the 1400 year history of these documents, not one has ever been changed by Muslims.

9 Belief in Prophets According to Islamic beliefs, prophets are not imbued with divinity. Islamic prophets include: Adam Noah Abraham Ishmael Isaac Jacob Solomon David Moses Zachariah Jesus Muhammad Muhammad is considered to be the last prophet

10 Muslims in the World 1/5 of the world’s population is Muslim
2nd largest religion in world ~1.2 billion people are Muslim The largest concentration of Muslims is in Indonesia Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in North America. 150 million in India 50 million in China 60 million in Central Asian Republics 6-8 million in the U.S.

11 Sunna/Sunnah The practices, customs and traditions of the Prophet Muhammad These are considered to be a perfect example Much knowledge and understanding come from a the hadiths Shariah come from a combination of the Koran and Sunnah

12 Shariah/Sharia/Sharīʿah
These are a set of laws made after the death of Muhammad in order to practically live in the world Most of these laws are taken directly from the Koran Muslims are expected to lead lives according to the sharia

13 Shariah/Sharia/Sharīʿah
These are said to be a divinely ordained path of conduct that guides Muslims toward a practical expression of religious conviction in this world Sharia includes guidelines for penal law, laws of transactions, family law, succession law, and court procedures and was usually administered by sharia courts There are multiple nations which have laws heavily influenced by Sharia Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bosnia, Algeria, Malaysia, ect

14 Jihad Does not mean “holy war”
Rather it relates it means to strive, or struggle against evil There are three levels of Jihad: The Individual The Community The International Individual Jihad is by far the most important

15 Jihad It can refer to internal as well as external efforts to be a good Muslims or believer Can also mean working to inform people about the faith of Islam There however can be violent jihad, but this is very rare and needs specific things to happen

16 Jihad An individual can not declare jihad
The religious military campaign has to be declared by a proper authority, advised by scholars, who say the religion and people are under threat This would create a “just war” and thus true jihad in a violent way

17 Jihad The Prophet Mohammed told his followers returning from a military campaign: "This day we have returned from the minor jihad to the major jihad” He meant returning from armed battle to the peaceful battle for self-control and betterment Many different people and groups have misused and misrepresented Jihad for individual goals

18 5 Pillars of Islam The Five Pillars of Islam are the framework of the Muslim life The Five Pillars are most famously discussed in the Hadith of Gabriel These are five essential practices that all Muslims must follow to fully live and submit to God
