WELCOME Gadgets Information Presentation

2 WHAT IS GADGETS ? Gadget is a small tool such as a machine that has a particular function, but is often thought of as a novelty. Gadgets are sometimes referred to as gizmos. Gizmos in particular are a bit different than gadgets. Gadgets in particular are small tools powered by electronic principles (a circuit board). Reference :

3 BRIEF HISTORY OF GADGETS
The origins of the word “gadget” trace back to the 19th century. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, there is anecdotal (not necessarily true) evidence for the use of “gadget” as a placeholder name for a technical item whose precise name one can’t remember since the 1850s; with Robert Brown’s 1886 book Spun yarn and Spindrift, A sailor boy’s log of a voyage out and home in a China tea-clipper containing the earliest known usage in print. The etymology of the word is disputed. A widely circulated story holds that the word gadget was “invented” when Gadget, Gauthier & Cie, the company behind the repose construction of the Statue of Liberty (1886), made a small-scale version of the monument and named it after their firm; however this contradicts the evidence that the word was already used before in nautical circles, and the fact that it did not become popular, at least in the USA, until after World War I. Other sources cite a derivation from the French gâchette which has been applied to various pieces of a firing mechanism, or the French gagée, a small tool or accessory. Reference:

4 Nokia 5110 This cell phone was the most popular consumer model at the time of its release and for some time afterwards.

5 Motorola MicroTAC 9800X The first truly portable phone. Up until its release, most cellular phones were installed as car phones due to the inability to fit them into a jacket pocket.

6 Nokia 3210 The internal antenna and predictive T9 text messaging sold approximately 160 million of these phones.

7 Ericsson R380 The R380 featured a black and white touchscreen, partially covered by a flip.

8 Motorola Page Writer (1996)
The Page Writer which looked like a thicker version of Motorola's then-current one-way text pagers--sported a flip-top design that, when opened, revealed a QWERTY keypad as well as a four-line backlit monochrome LCD screen. Far ahead of its time, it was eventually super ceded by less costly mobile messaging options.

9 Sony CDP-101 (1982) The first commercial compact disc player signaled a technological sea change that ultimately caused millions of music lovers to ditch their turntables. The boxy CDP-101 wasn't especially sleek, and at $900 it was priced for audiophiles, but it ushered in the age of digital sound--no more hisses, scratches, pops, or skips. Now, with Super Audio CD and DVD-Audio offering vastly superior sound, and MP3 downloads dominating music sales, CD players may eventually join turntables and 8-track machines (#46) as relics of our audio past. But they will sure have sounded good while they lasted.
