2 East Asia For our class, East Asia will mean the area including China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Taiwan, and Mongolia. Our focus will be on China, Japan, and the Koreas.

3 East Asia Fast Facts Has the 2nd, 3rd, and 14th largest economies in the world (U.S. #1, Panama #85) Has a population of over 1.5 billion All of the countries except for Mongolia have a military budget in the top 25 in the world (U.S. #1, Panama #111) Has the #1, 5, 8, 17 exporters in the world

4 Economic Explosion South Korea was a poor nation in the 1950s. Today it is a developed nation and one of the top 20 economies in the world. China has seen around 10% growth for every year since This 35-year streak is unprecedented in known human history. Taiwan has seen growth similar to that of South Korea. Japan has been one of the wealthiest nations with one of the largest economies despite few natural resources.
