1 Leading to the Great Awakening
Describe the relationship between the moral and political ideas of the Great Awakening and the development of revolutionary fervor

2 Before America Way before England even thought about colonizing America (before they even knew there was land over here) England started to try out the idea of democracy Democracy: government ruled by the people This government was based on the idea that individuals had certain rights SOUND FAMILIAR??

3 Magna Carta* Signed in the year 1215
Nobles forced England’s King John to sign ‘Magna Carta’ is Latin for ‘great charter’ First document to restrict the king’s power King can’t tax people without asking first Protected rights of people to own private property Guaranteed the right to trial by jury SOUND FAMILIAR??

4 Key Concepts of the Magna Carta
Established the idea that all people had certain guaranteed rights Established the principle that the king must also obey the laws

5 Vocabulary Break! Parliament:
a group of elected nobles that advised the king under the Magna Carta Their greatest power was the right to approve new taxes No king could raise taxes without Parliament’s permission After ~400, Parliament had branched off into a two-house legislature (a group of people who have the power to make laws)

6 Turn & Talk How did a democratic system of government emerge in England? The Magna Carta formed a council to limit the king’s power and protect citizens’ rights, which developed into Parliament with elected members.

7 Magna Carta Comes to America
When English colonists came to America they brought the idea that everyone had rights with them

8 John Locke English philosopher that proposed that people have certain natural rights (rights that belonged to every human being from birth) These ‘natural rights’ include: life, liberty, and property SOUND FAMILIAR?? Challenged the idea of ‘divine right’ (rights given to people by the king)

9 Locke Influences the Colonists
Said government was created to protect peoples’ rights so if the king violates peoples’ rights they have the right to overthrow them If you were a colonist, which viewpoint (divine right vs. natural rights) would be more appealing?

10 Baron de Montesquieu French philosopher who also didn’t believe in divine right Thought government’s power should be clearly defined and limited Favored a separation of power (division of government’s power into separate branches) because it kept any group from becoming too powerful SOUND FAMILIAR??

11 Under English Law Even though colonists were thousands of miles away they were still under English rule and law Colonists were allowed to create their own government to govern the colonies, create laws, and set voting rules but ultimately still had to listen to the king Example: Classrooms inside a school

12 Great Awakening People had begun to take religion less seriously and focus more on logic Preachers encouraged people to examine their lives and commit themselves to God Preachers scared people back into the churches & new organized churches sprang up Reunited the colonies through religion

13 Great Awakening to Revolution
Great Awakening affected the way people viewed their political rights and their government Helped reinforce democratic ideas (all people have rights that have been given to them by God) People realized if they could decide how to worship God on their own, they could also decide how to govern themselves

14 Vocabulary Break! Revolution: Fervor:
A forcible overthrow of a government or social order for a new system Fervor: Intense and passionate feeling

15 Turn & Talk What was the goal of the Great Awakening?
To revive (bring back) religious feeling What was the most important outcome of the Great Awakening? People felt that if they could decide for themselves how to worship, they could also choose how to govern themselves.
