2 There are 3 different types of rocks;
Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic

3 Igneous Rock Igneous rocks are formed by magma and lava as it cools. Igneous rocks form in two different ways. Rock that comes from lava cools very fast and can either be very light and airy or the rocks can be glassy. Rocks that come from magma are formed under ground. They are often times very hard and have more colors.

4 Igneous Rock Summary Igneous rock are created from the cooling and solidification of magma and lava. Some types of igneous are: Pumice Obsidian granite

6 Sedimentary Rock Sedimentary rock is made when sediments (sand, gravel, and dirt) are pressed together over time and become a rock Sedimentary rock is formed in layers.

Sedimentary rock is created from the deposition of sediments in layers over time. Types of Sedimentary Rock Shale Sandstone Conglomerate

9 Metamorphic Rock Metamorphic rocks are made from other rocks.
Heat and pressure help change an igneous or sedimentary rock into a new kind of rock (think about how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly)

13 Sediment Creation Sediments and rocks are creating through many different processes: - weathering - erosion - deposition - compaction - cementation - melting - cooling

14 Weathering Weathering is the creation of smaller pieces of rock through physical or chemical means.

15 Erosion The moving of weathered products from their original position.

17 Deposition The settling out of sediment.

18 Compaction and cementation
The process by which sediment is squeezed and glued into a rock.

19 How are they made? An igneous rock goes through weathering, erosion, & deposition to become a sedimentary rock. A sedimentary rock must go through melting and then cooling to become an igneous rock. An igneous rock goes through lots of heat and pressure to become a metamorphic rock. A metamorphic rock goes through melting and cooling to become an igneous rock. A metamorphic rock goes through weathering, erosion, and deposition to become a sedimentary rock. A sedimentary rock goes through lots of heat and pressure to become a metamorphic rock.

23 Rocks have many different parts
Rocks can be sorted into groups by looking at their parts. Some rock parts are: Crystals Grains

24 Crystals Crystals are different atoms that are formed in a pattern. They can be big or small, fat or thin.

25 Grains Grains are smaller pieces of rock or sediment. Grain size is something that is used a lot to help decide the rock type. You can look at a grains size, shape, pattern
