Data for detection in quiet are repeated in the two panels. Children’s data are the average threshold (n = 2, n = 3, or n = 4) for each child plotted as a function of age within each masking category. Adults’ data are plotted as the average across observers (n = 8), with error bars at the far right of each data cluster showing ±1 standard error of the mean around the mean. Line fits are based on the child data, with the slopes indicated at the bottom of each panel.
