Classify Types of Quadrilaterals
Unit of Study 10: Plane Shapes Global Concept Guide: 3 of 4
2
Content Development Students need to understand that a quadrilateral is any closed figure made up of four line segments that connect only at vertices. Quadrilaterals can be categorized into the following categories: Square, Rectangle, Rhombus, Parallelogram, Trapezoid Students should explore a variety of shapes, sort them based on attributes, and name them based on their attributes. Quadrilaterals can fall into more than one category. Use the attributes to name the shape. Vocabulary and attributes should be heavily emphasized throughout this Unit of Study. It is important to focus on the properties of the figures rather than on simple identification.
3
Content Development How can this shape have more than one name? square
Quadrilateral with 2 pairs of parallel sides congruent sides and four right angles. rectangle Quadrilateral with 2 pairs of parallel sides and four right angles. parallelogram rhombus Quadrilateral with all congruent sides. Quadrilateral with opposite sides parallel.
4
Day 1 and 2 How can you describe a quadrilateral? How can you compare quadrilaterals? Show various examples of quadrilaterals and ask students to notice what all the shapes have in common (all closed figures, all made up of 4 line segments, all have 4 vertices etc.) Have students sort the quadrilaterals and record the attributes in which they sorted them. Discuss attributes Have students build quadrilaterals using Anglegs and Geoboards
5
Misconceptions Alert:
Day 3 How can you classify a quadrilateral? Can a quadrilateral be classified into more than one category? Students apply their understanding of quadrilaterals from Day 1 to classifying quadrilaterals on Day 3. Give students a variety of quadrilaterals (squares, rectangles, rhombi, trapezoids, parallelograms). Have students discuss the attributes of the shapes and create definitions based on the attributes. Have students classify shapes based on the student generated definitions. Misconceptions Alert: Students may think that a shape can only be classified as one thing. Focus on the attributes of quadrilaterals and have students name according to the attributes.

Enrich/Reteach For students who are struggling with this concept, use Geoboards and Anglegs to have students build quadrilaterals. Use 9.7 Reteach R83 For students who need extensions, give them a variety of riddles. The Enrich activity on E83 can be used as well as the Enrich Activity Lesson B
