2. Types of Post-secondary Institutes
GPA or Research Universities
Examples: UBC, SFU, UVIC, Queens, U of T, U of A etc.
Offer Bachelors, Masters and PHD degrees with opportunities to do formal research .
Universities require specific Grades 11 and 12 courses with marks that accumulating into a specific average for admission known as a GPA.
Usually only offer academics not career/trades/tech programs.
Have deadlines for applications – usually in Jan/Feb but this varies.

3. First Applied, First Registered Post-sec Institutes
Examples: Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Thompson Rivers University, Langara College, Douglas College, Capilano U, etc.
Offer university degrees, trades and technologies, career specific programs, high school upgrading etc.
Admission is based on English 12 mark (final or blended).
Usually a required minimum mark to enrol in university level courses. Example: Kwantlen: 67% in English 12.
Early applications are important because these post-sec ‘s have application start dates, not deadlines for applications.

4. Institutes of Technology – Career and Trades
Examples: BCIT, VCC, Justice Institute, Nicola Valley Institute, Kwantlen U, Thompson Rivers U, etc.
Offer university degrees, trades and technologies, and career specific programs.
Requires specific Grades 11 and 12 courses with specific marks.
Usually works on a “First Applied, First Registered” basis (application start date) but this also depends on the program. Some programs work on a continual or waitlist basis.

5. Where to Apply?
ApplyBC Students can apply to BC universities and college through this site or google the post-sec Apply Alberta Google: Apply to Ontario Universities or OUAC Use the 105D form. Apply by mid-Jan. for the early application process. Usually these universities use the Term 1 marks - Dec. 14 for admission. Expensive application. USA Common Application Form is used for over 700 universities and colleges in the USA.

Activate PSI form in November for Grad Trans – Google “Student Secure Web”
Observe “application start dates” and “application deadlines”

7. Timeline
If you are choosing to attend post-secondary, observe application start dates and deadlines. Most applications are available in October Choose a back-up post-secondary also.
Login in to the Post-secondary when you receive a student number from that institute.
Declare your marks via post-sec websites, post-sec s, self-reporting sites etc., usually through your LOGIN site.
Out of province post-sec’s usually want Term 1 marks (Dec 14)
BC post-sec’s usually want Term 2 marks (March 8).
Every post-secondary’s seem to have a different dates for marks to be declared.
Finish online courses, used for admission, by February 2017 to have everything run smoothly. Use “Delta Access” if possible.

8. Timeline: Personal Profiles and Entrance Exams
Submit Personal Profiles and Test Scores:
UBC wants a personal profile for all faculties and also a video for the Business faculty.
SFU and UVIC want personal profiles for Business only.
Tests: BCIT pretests (can be done with me)
SATS – info in the Career Centre
LPI or other English Language Tests
IELETS or TOEFL for international students
“Personal Profiles” are used to assess preparedness and maturity for university. The profile is usually a set questionnaire requiring “reflective” answers. Profile info about activities and achievements is used, in addition to academics, to select qualified applicants.

Admission Averages are Guidelines - Averages are competitive so... in reality they can be higher!
UBC Vancouver
ALL Faculties will require a minimum GPA in the mid 80 % to low 90% except Music at 70%
Personal Profile for all faculties
UBC Okanagan
Faculties (Arts/Science/Management) - high 70 %'s to Nursing - high 80%’s
Fine Arts is 67%
Personal Profile for all faculties.
UBC will/can revoke offer of admission if the English 12 provincial exam drops 20% from the classroom mark.

SIMON FRASER
Arts /Sciences/Environment: mid 80% ‘s
Business: 83% and personal profile but realistically it is in the high 80%’s
Applied Science/Education/Health Science: 90%
Offers of admission were revoked if a student’s final marks drop below 60% in English and Math and an overall average of 70% Therefore, future "Arts" students will need 60% in the qualifying Math (PC Math 11 or Foundations 11).
College transfer students need a GPA of at least 2.7 to a 3.00 depending on faculty.
UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA
Humanities/Social Sciences/Sciences/Computer Science: 80%
Business: 80%/mandatory personal profile
Engineering (BEng/BSEng): 84%
College transfer students need a GPA of at least 2.0.

MCGILL UNIVERSITY - Based on the TOP "5" Academics
Arts/Sciences/Engineering/Kinesiology/Architecture : high 80% to low 90%’s
Business Management: 93% (80% in English and 85% in each math course)
Nursing: % (80% in math and science courses)
80% in English for all faculties
ENGLISH 12 REQUIREMENTS for BC Post-secondary Institutes
Langara 80% to take first year university transfer English.
Students are restricted in some first year university courses such as Biology, without 67% in English 12.
Kwantlen 73% to take a first year university transfer English course.
67% to take any university course.
SFU % to take a first year English course.
60% to take any first year course.
UBC % to take a first year English course.
70% in either English 11 final mark or English 12, Term 2 marks

12. Scholarships and Bursaries
SCHOLARSHIPS A scholarship is a financial gift based on merit or excellence in a particular area. Usually also includes academic excellent , leadership and service. BURSARIES A bursary is based on financial need and usually evidence of need is required. Often it is also based on merit or excellence in a particular area. AUTOMATIC AWARDS - No Need to Apply! Offered to students based on the Term 2 or Term 3 academic marks so a separate awards application is not necessary. An example of an automatic award is the ‘ Summit ’ from SFU - this automatic award requires a 95% average on Term 3, based on the four academic admission courses needed for entrance to the faculty to which you applied.

NOMINATED AWARDS
The School Awards Committee looks at approximately 8 nominated awards throughout the year.
Students submit their nominated scholarship application for consideration, are short listed according to the criteria and then hopefully nominated by the committee.
Criteria Examples:
- Academics (usually in the 90%’s)
- Leadership
- involvement and achievements in school and/or the community
- athletics, and fine arts in graphics, music, drama, and theatre
- student government
- academic competitions
- volunteer activities and other endeavors.
- a vision for your future
Student must meet the criteria of the award.
These awards are usually from universities (Queens, University of Toronto, etc.) or Foundations (Loren, Schulich Leadership, BC Excellence Award, etc.),

OPEN AWARDS
These awards are open to all students who meet the criteria.
Students must apply for these awards.
These awards can be from universities, colleges, unions, and private and public organizations. SDSS has Community Awards open to Grade 12, available in April.
An example of a post-secondary open award is the U of Victoria Entrance Scholarship.
Other examples are the Envision Scholarship or the Delta Hospital Foundation Scholarship.
BURSARIES AND STUDENT LOANS
Open to all students who are in need of financial assistance and who have maintained a good academic record. Students must apply for this assistance.
Evidence of financial need is required as well as meeting special requirements or qualifications set out by the bursary donor.
Filling out a Provincial Government Loan Package will increase your chances of receiving a bursary.
Student Loan Packages are available on-line at Student Aid BC and are usually filled out and submitted by June 30 for a September post-secondary start.

15. Awards Applications Letters of Reference
Choose people who will speak positively about you.  Letters take time and effort so make sure you ask the referee at least 2 weeks before you need the letter. Send a thank you note or bring a Starbucks or bake a couple of cookies to say thank you for the reference letter.   Transcripts  Transcripts can be accessed from "Student or Parent Connect".  Go to "Grades" then "Print".  For paper copies ask the career advisor or counselor for an official signature and seal.  Keep Originals, Quality and Proofreading Your letters, resumes, or essays should look as complete as possible to impress the reader. Proofread! Then get your parents to proofread! Content… Be Specific Be Comprehensive. Include things that represent a commitment of time and have brought you personal growth. Be reflective. For example... "During the school year, I represented our grad class on Student Council.  One opportunity,  fundraising for the Terry Fox Run not only strengthened my leadership skills but also further had the opportunity to cooperate and coordinate with others.  We raised over $5000".  Our fundraising event ...
