1 Rock Cycle

2 Rocks Naturally formed Solid Mix of minerals and/or organic matter

3 What is the Rock Cycle? Continual process
New rocks form from old rock material No beginning or end (each type can turn into each of the three types)

4 Types of Rocks Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic

5 How are igneous rocks formed?
Rock pieces melt into magma Magma cools to form intrusive igneous rock Lava cools to form extrusive igneous rock

6 How are Sedimentary Rocks formed?
W.E.D.C. forms a sedimentary rock. Weathering  Erosion  Deposition  Compaction/Cementation Weathering- water, wind, ice, heat break down rock Erosion- sediment is transported from one location to another Deposition- sediment moved by erosion settles in bodies of water or low-lying areas Compaction- sediments squeeze together to form a rock

7 How are metamorphic rocks formed?
Intense heat and pressure
