1 Revolution: Part 4 8th Grade

2 Things to Remember: Continental Army: created by the 2nd Continental Congress to defend the colonies from Britain, commanded by George Washington. Declaration of Independence: Statement that defined the colonists’ rights, outlined their complaints against Great Britain, and declared the colonies’ independence. Patriots: Colonists who fought for independence. Loyalists: Colonists who sided with Britain in the revolution. Also called Tories.

3 Never Getting Back Together!

4 New Hope: 8.22 Battle of Trenton: battle in New Jersey in which Patriots captured British Troops on Christmas night after crossing the Delaware River. Battle of Princeton: battle in which Patriots drove back British forces in New Jersey.

5 Turning Point: 8.22 Battle of Saratoga: battle in New York that resulted in a major defeat of British Troops, Patriots’ greatest victory up to this point.

Marquis de Lafayette: wealthy, young French Officer who convinced France to make an alliance with the Patriots. Bernardo de Galvez: Governor of Spanish Louisiana territory who helped the Patriots.

Is where Washington settled his troops for the winter of 1777, they suffered shortages of food, clothing, provision, and pay. More then a fifth of the soldiers died of disease and malnutrition.

10 Battle of Yorktown: 8.22 Last major battle of the Revolutionary War; site of British General Cornwallis’s surrender to the Patriots and French in Virginia.
