2 SONAR A device utilizing sound to determine the range and direction to an underwater object. Used on ships to measure depth of water Detect large concentrations of fish or large objects underwater

3 How does it work? Sends a pulse Time of the echo’s return is measured
Can calculate the distance travelled by knowing the speed of sound in water Bats and whales use the same method to sense their surroundings

4 Benefits/Drawbacks Benefits Drawbacks
Detect/prevent possible dangers underwater Used on ships, naval vessels, submarines fish finding searching for shipwrecks probing harbors where visibility is poor oceanography studies searching for underwater geological faults mapping the ocean floor. Military usages No major drawbacks, except when your military enemy is using it against you
