Utilities? We know that system software is made up of an operating system (OS) and of utilities applications. So what are these utilities applications? A utility is something that you utilize for a specific job or task. ( example we utilize the car or bus to get us to a destination) Therefore when it comes to a computer, what do you think that a utility application does?

why do we need those computer utilities and why they are important?
Ms Jennifer - Introductiion to Operating Systems why do we need those computer utilities and why they are important? Utilities applications are important for managing and organizing our files and keep (maintain) our computers in optimal condition. Thanks buddy, I am happy

What can go wrong with a computer?
Ms Jennifer - Introductiion to Operating Systems What can go wrong with a computer? spam Computer Malware Too many files, lack of disk space and outdated software

Defragmentation Let us pretend that the coloured boxes in the picture below are chunks of data. What do you think is happening in this short video clip? Defragmentation is the process of organizing fragment computer data by placing them in their appropriate file locations, thus saving disk space.

File Compression Troy needs to send 15 files by , but he will take plenty of time to attach one file a time. Troy also knows that the total size of these files is too large to send them all by . What can Troy do? Troy can compress these files into ONE archive file and send only one attachment in a smaller size. This process is called Compression. Size decreases with compression by reducing the bits / bytes of files

scandisk When we feel sick we go to the doctor for a medical check up to cure our illnesses or virus. Therefore it is important to do regular check ups to stay healthy The computer also need regular check ups to make sure that it is clean and ‘cure’ (remove) its illnesses (malware). The computer illnesses are called malware or computer virus. The computer doctor is called scan disk. Scan disk job is to scan the computer and remove bad sectors and malware from the computer.

Formatting – why format?
Ms Jennifer - Introductiion to Operating Systems Formatting – why format? Upgrade the OS / Computer Remove corrupted (damaged) / unwanted files Prepare disk for fresh software (any disk like pen drive, hard disk, removable disks or a disk partition) So, instead of changing our PC we can do a disk format to renew our PC to its original state (which is without an OS) Note that every software upgrade has to be compatible with the computer hardware
