1 CEDAR Frontiers – Understanding the Polar Cap Ionosphere-Magnetosphere System Canadian High-Arctic Ionospheric Network (CHAIN) Jayachandran P. T., University of New Brunswick, Canada CHAIN - An array of radio and optical instruments in the polar cap (open field lines) to study the dynamics of the solar wind – magnetosphere – ionospheric interaction for better understanding of the complex Sun Earth system

2 Scientific objectives of CHAIN
Instrument components of CHAIN 6 Canadian Advanced Digital Ionosondes – Alert, Eureka, Resolute Bay, Cambridge Bay, Iqaluit, and Clyde River 9 GPS dual frequency high data rate receivers – (Alert, Eureka, Grise Fiord, Resolute Bay, Pond Inlet, Clyde River, Cambridge Bay, Taloyoak, and Iqaluit) 2 Allsky Imagers – Iqaluit and Eureka 3 Meridian Scanning Photometers – Eureka, Clyde River, and Iqaluit Scientific objectives of CHAIN Energy and mass transport across the polar cap Generation and dynamics of ionization structures in the polar cap Macroscale – Tongue of ionization (>1000 km) Mesoscale – Polar patches (Few hundred km) Microscale – Scintillation producing structures (Few km) Role of ionosphere in M-I coupling

3 Possibilities with CEDAR
AMISR and CHAIN will be complimentary High-temporal and spatial resolution Total Electron Content (TEC) measurements Three dimensional ionospheric tomography of ionization as well as thermal structures in the polar cap ionosphere using ground based ionosonde and GPS TEC measurements Polar cap boundary measurements using the array of photometers Coarse information about precipitating particle energy in the polar cap ionosphere Ground-based measurement support for upcoming satellite missions
