Senakulo Senakulo is when a communtiy comes together to reenact Jesus’ life especially his sufferings. In Morong, Rizal the Senakulo is held within 2 days starting from Holy Thursday until the end of Good Friday. The Senakulo involves real crucifiction and real sufferings for the people think this is a form of penance, however, this is not encouraged. The Senakulo has become a tourist attraction because of its uniqueness, authenticity & passion.

Pasyon: A Song for Senakulo
Narrative of the Pasion, Death & Ressurection of Jesus Christ. Epic poetry with stanzas of five lines and each line has eight syllables. Popular in the Philippines especially during the Holy Week. Set into writing by Gaspar Aquino de Belen, written in & approved in 1704. In 1852, there was another version made by Aniceto de Merced but it was not as popular as the other one. The Pabasa or the recitation will span several days extending to Black Saturday.
5
Singers will chant the verses of Pasyon without pause from beginning to end in front of a specially-constructed shrine or altar. This is facilitated by the chanters working in shifts due to its very long duration.

Senakulo, Now The orginal Senakulo has evolved to the modern drama form. The modern form was adapted in 1993 by the Pangkalinangang Kilusan ng mga Taga-Morong (PAKITAMO), the local cultural society in Morong, Rizal, for a more comprehensive presentation of the story. The play is entitiled “Ang Tagapagligtas” and is based on four gospels showing Christ’s nativity, youth, public ministry, suffering & death. Fictional characters and dialogues are used as details to link the gaps left open in the Bible.
7
The play is in three acts - one act presented each night from Holy Wednesday to Good Friday.
A verse is sung in the traditional pasyon manner as prologue to each act. This modern form does not use real crucifixion & suffering.
