3 TYPICAL MEDIA WEATHER MAP
Look at the symbols. What weather does Eastern England have? What is the weather like in Northern Scotland ?

4 This is an example of a synoptic chart.
Weather is recorded on the chart using special symbols, which represent the conditions at weather station at that present time. Understanding Weather Symbols

5 A number here shows temperature
The lines at the end show the wind speed. The circle shows the level of cloud cover. 7 The condition of the weather is shown underneath. (for example this shows that there is fog) The line coming off the circle shows the direction the wind is coming from.

Wind Five knots is added for each half a feather. The wind speed is shown by the ‘feathers’. 10 knots. Understanding Weather Symbols Where the wind has come from…. Winds are named after their origin.

Get a white board between you and the person sitting next to you. Take turns and use the white board to draw a weather symbol. The person who is not drawing needs to work out what the weather is like. They can not use their jotters, see how much you can remember! Understanding Weather Symbols
