Vases This was a vase from the 1740’s. And what they look like now is different. This is what they used to hold their valuable items. The women hold water to drink for families. The newer vase is the one that is used now for flowers and other things. And the ones used now have more designs and colors. By Kaylee Xayaphanh and Kennedy Corey Return to Exhibit

Water Jugs When the first colonists came, they used many things. My artifact is water jug. The water jug back then was made by hand. The water jug we have now is made by machines. The jug we use now is made of glass. The old jug is made of clay. Return to Exhibit

Colonial and Modern Silverware
Old forks and new ones are similar by their uses. The old one has two points the modern fork has four. Old forks are made of wood and new forks are made of plastic or metal. Forks have helped us eat without our hands. Return to Exhibit

Tankards The tankard was a colonial tool used in the 1750s. The tankard was made of metal and had a designed handle with a lid. The tankard held water and other drinks. You could also use this tool to travel. Today we have cups that are made out of plastic and glass. People use it to drink: tea, water, and other drinks. They are a bit heavy. You can buy these cups from the store. In the past, they were made by hand. Return to Exhibit

Houses The bottom picture is a house from the colony of Jamestown. This house has no windows or electricity. This house was restored to show how the colonists lived. The house was also a place of learning. Now we have schools. The top picture is a present day house that we live in today. By Garrison and Alec Return to Exhibit

Bathrooms In the 1700’s, people used outhouses instead of toilets. An outhouse is basically a toilet outside except there is no light or electricity, but there was just a little light from the top and bottom openings. Once your toilet is full, you have to move it to another place. Toilets today can flush, have electricity, and is actually INSIDE the house! It also is much easier to clean. Rather than using saw dust to clean your bathroom, you can use cleaning materials. Also, the new toilet doesn’t have to move place to place, and it never gets full. Return to Exhibit

Muskets One thing they used in the 1750s were Muskets. The muskets they used a long time ago were loaded with gunpowder. The guns we use today are more advanced than the guns they used in the 1750s.The guns used in the 1750s were only used for small defense .Now we use guns for more advanced wars. Return to Exhibit

Headstones The old gravestone was made out of wood and the new gravestone is made out of marble and was carved. The old gravestone wasn’t that much creative, It was just made out of wood on flat surface of rocks. The new gravestone is much bigger and on grass with fences around with it. Also on the old gravestone it doesn’t have writing on it for the people who died. On the new gravestone it has writing on it. Return to Exhibit

Cups The silver cup is a cup that was used in the original 13 colonies. The colonial cup was made out of silver. These cups were mainly used by rich people. Other less expensive cups were made out of wood. Today, cups are made out of glass and plastic. They were used the same way we use them today. Return to Exhibit

Houses In the 1700’s, houses were made out of straw, wood, mud, and clay. These houses were not big, they were very small. They weren’t sturdy, they were small, weak, and smelly houses. Later on, they started building log cabins which were medium sized houses. On this day we have large, nice, and sturdy houses. Return to Exhibit

Stools These are stools from modern day and colonial times. The colonial times one has three legs and was used for milking cows. The children might have sat on them at dinner and other meals. They were also used for milking cows. Now, for the modern day stools, they are used to sit on at tables. Teachers use them to read books, sometimes. They are fun to sit on and inexpensive Return to Exhibit

Weapons Guns were very useful in the 1700’s. Guns were mostly used for hunting. Colonists also used hunting knives and swords. Guns from the 1700’s used gunpowder to fire, so they were extremely dangerous. Swords were used for war while knives were used for hunting. Return to Exhibit

Looms The loom dates back all the way to The earliest power loom was supposedly invented by Edmund Cartwright in There are many different types of the loom like vertical and tapestry looms, just to name a few. The set of threads in the loom are called the weft, and these are just a set of the threads in the loom. The simplest looms have only one frame, in which the weaving is done by hand. The loom is still used today, but are machines. Some countries still use the regular loom. Return to Exhibit

Automobiles Cars have changed a lot. Back in the 1700’s people used horses and wagons for transportation. They use them to haul people and goods. They usually didn’t travel very long distances. Now, cars are a very fast way to transport people and things. Today most people own and drive a car. It is our most popular form of transportation. Return to Exhibit

Ovens Picture #1 is an oven that was similar to what was used in the colony of Jamestown. Picture #2 is an oven that we can use now. As you can see, these have changed greatly over the years. We do not use these ovens any more in our homes, we have electric or gas ovens. 2011 Oven 1700’s Oven Return to Exhibit

Dancing Cloths These artifacts are different in many ways. As you see, the older clothes have more of a frill to them then the modern ones do. These both have hats included in the outfit. This newer dress has fewer colors and is shorter in length. The hair styles in both are different. Not all dresses nowadays are that short. It took a lot of effort and time to make dresses back then. Return to Exhibit

Houses Houses in the 1700’s weren’t as advanced as the houses we have today. The houses back then didn’t air conditioning. Houses were made of weak lumber and other types of wood. The way they build house back then was that they build them by hand, but now we build our houses by hand and machine. They didn't have glass windows in their house in the 1700’s, but now we do. And the houses were very small in colonial times, but now the houses today can be small or they can be very big. Return to Exhibit

Houses There is a big difference between colonial houses and houses now. The difference between houses then and houses now is the house back then had no lights, no separate bed rooms, and no air conditioners. Also back then houses were not fancy. There is also more like houses back then were very small. Now we have stairs, pools, fancy windows and all that they did not have in colonial times. Return to Exhibit

Fireplaces The fireplace was used all the way back in colonial times. In the past, the fireplace takes up almost the entire house. They used it to cook, warm their small houses, warm water for baths, and warm their hands and feet. The normal way to release the smoke of the fire (in the colonial times) was usually just a hole in the roof of the house. A smoke hood would often be added to direct the some in a certain direction. Return to Exhibit

Gardening Tools The gardening tools help with a lot of things. They help feed the colonists and today we still use gardening tools. Gardening tools have changed by look and design, and that they have changed the handles. In the past they were made out of wood. Today, they are mostly made of plastic and medal. Many of the tools have been replaced by machines and most gardening is not done by hand now. Return to Exhibit

Carriages Carriages have changed a lot throughout time. In the past they were fueled horses, and today we high-powered engines. Cars have changed in design and color. They are also made out of different materials and enable us to travel farther and faster. Return to Exhibit

Artifact 22 Houses were different, back in the day. In the 1700’s the houses were made of old wood and usually only had one room. The houses didn’t use electricity, like present day houses. They didn’t have glass windows or bathrooms. Usually the floors were made of dirt or word. They only had a fireplace to cook on and use for heat. Present day house use electricity, have many rooms and can be very big. Many have large kitchens with stoves, sinks, ovens, refrigerators and many other comforts. Houses also have glass windows, bathrooms, and heat or air conditioning. They are much nicer to live in. Return to Entrance
