1 Electron Transport Chain Manipulative
Purpose- This activity allows students to interact with the process of the ETC to better understand aerobic cell respiration and the structure of the mitochondria. Directions- Print off the mitochondria page to act as the working space/background for students to move the pieces across. Print off the page with the pieces and cut out and store them in a plastic baggies or envelopes. Students can work in pairs (think/pair/share is an option) or alone to physically model the process of ETC. For example, students move NADH up to complex I and bring in NAD+ and H+ to simulate the process of oxidation. Educators can add or remove pieces as they see fit to match the complexity of their lesson. Educators can also give scenarios for students to model how the ETC might change under certain circumstances such as low oxygen levels or disease states.
