1 Photosynthesis and Respiration Lesson 6
Organisms that can make their own food = producers or autotrophs What is the process used to make this food? PHOTOSYNTHESIS = Light put together Process by which organisms use energy from sunlight to make their own food. What organelle does this process take place in? Chloroplasts What is the green substance that captures the sun’s energy? Chlorophyll

2 (Glucose) Photosynthesis

3 + + CO2 + + 6 6 6 H2O C6H12O6 O2 What is made in the end? oxygen
What four things are needed for photosynthesis? + Glucose (Sugar) sunlight Oxygen Carbon Dioxide Water chlorophyll CO2 + 6 6 sunlight H2O + C6H12O6 6 O2 chlorophyll (Raw Materials/Reactants) (Products) How does the plant get these raw materials/ reactants? Water— roots Chlorophyll— already there Carbon Dioxide—taken in through the stomata (openings on underside of leaf) Sunlight— captures What is the waste product produced during photosynthesis? oxygen

4 For sure happens in humans—does it take place in plants?
If photosynthesis = making food for energy, what process breaks down food to release energy? CELLULAR RESPIRATION a.k.a aerobic respiration Oxygen What gas is necessary for this process? In which organelle does cellular respiration occur? Mitochondria What is the name of the energy made during this process? ATP Adenosine Triphosphate For sure happens in humans—does it take place in plants? YES

5 What is necessary for cellular respiration to take place?
Carbon Dioxide + + Water ATP Glucose + Oxygen + 6 H2O + ATP C6H12O6 + 6 O2 6 CO2 What is the waste product of cellular respiration? Carbon Dioxide

6 Let’s compare and contrast photosynthesis and cellullar respiration.
Photosynthesis- (Plants) 6CO2 + 6H2O sunlight / chlorophyll  C6H12O6 + 6O2 Cellular Respiration (Humans) C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP Look at the equation for photosynthesis-look at the equation for cellular respiration. What do you see? How are they the same? How are they different?

7 The carbon-oxygen cycle
The movement of carbon and oxygen through the environment is known as The carbon-oxygen cycle carbon dioxide Through plants take in & release photosynthesis, oxygen Through organisms take in & release cellular respiration, oxygen carbon dioxide Other processes also add carbon dioxide to the air!! Example--burning fossil fuels (oil, coal, wood, natural gas) and other decaying organic matter Organic Material – Material from living things.
