Crow Lake CHAPTER SUMMARIES CHAPTERS INFORMATION Chapter 16 (Mid-Past and Present) Kate focuses on education and pushes away family In university, Kate goes home less and less Study of “impact people have on environment” – connects to novel’s characters Kate explains interest in ecology studying pollution Kate and Daniel meet: “…the love I felt for Daniel was quite different from anything I had felt before…” (193) Kate started returning home for visits Kate tries to find Simon a gift (Minor) incident in lecture hall as Kate struggles with a memory while teaching Kate’s poor teaching a betrayal to Matt Chapter 17 (Takes Place in the Past) Assumption that Pye family not doing well as winter ends Pyes not seen around town during winter. Laurie not at school since October. Matt/Luke return to work in Spring. All “seems fine” Warning signs and concerned people, but “whatever it was…it wasn’t enough” (203) Life looking up for Morrison family Matt back at school; Luke working as a janitor Luke’s refusal to consider failure made things pay off Mrs. Stanovich takes care of girls, allowing Luke and Matt to work Chapter 18(Takes Places in the Past) Laurie leaves Pye home Pye family lays low. Matt and Luke still working on farm Insults from Calvin: “Pathetic. Useless as a girl. Hadn’t learned one goddamn thing about farming. Didn’t try. Dumb as a goddamn bullock.” – Laurie: “I must’ve got it from you.” (215) Laurie stands up to his father and this is why he runs Kate: Lives running parallel, (paths never cross) – but nobody realized that everything was actually coming together.

Crow Lake CHAPTER SUMMARIES CHAPTERS INFORMATION Chapter 19 (Takes Place in the Past) Matt and Kate’s last visit to ponds. Frogs mating. Purpose of life is to reproduce Pye family gradually returned to normal. Matt still works with Calvin Nobody seemed to think too much about Laurie Kate and Bo celebrate birthdays. Mrs. Stanovich bakes cakes. Kate makes friends. Idea of effort and work will be rewarded. Makes Kate think about Pye family – “ideal world” Luke no longer works for Calvin Pye, leaving just Matt Kate realizes Matt must leave for school Chapter 20 (Takes Place in the Present) Kate and Daniel leave Toronto for Crow Lake Kate has a positive experience as a teacher immediately before, counseling a student. Student has similar situation to Morrisons. Everyone has to grow up, but not everyone has to grow apart. This is a conflict for Kate because she now feels apart from Matt, whom she loves more than anyone else

Realization that life and relationships change Need to make sacrifices in order for life to work out Importance of realities, like making money Standing up for what you believe in All of this – growing up and learning lessons – revolves around Kate There are a number of lessons in these chapters, too. The impact we have on our environment – or the impact the environment has on us Hindsight How people are more connected than we might realize The purpose of life Growing up and growing apart

Crow Lake KATE’S CHARACTER CHAPTERS INFORMATION Consider Kate’s character in these chapters – and the novel as a whole. There are quite a few important plot and conflict pieces that happen, and they all affect her in different ways. Kate Relationship with Matt/Luke Love Worry Separation Relationship with Daniel Improved communication Bringing him into family Relationship as Teacher Honouring Luke Struggling with Connections to Students Bad Lecture Incident Helping Student Incident (Fiona) Relationship with Others Observations of Pye Family (Especially Laurie and Marie) Growing realization of how world works

Crow Lake THEMES CHAPTERS INFORMATION There are only four chapters left in the novel, and there are a number of plot/conflict issues that need to come together and become resolved. At this point, how have the central themes in the novel developed? Tragedy Family Relationships Isolation Growing Up Are there any other possible themes in Crow Lake?
