4 InCites Journal Citation Reports
InCites Journal Citation Reports includes citation data drawn from approximately 12,000 scholarly and technical journals and conference proceedings from more than 3,300 publishers in over 60 countries. It covers almost all specialties in science, technology, and the social sciences and enables the evaluation and comparison of journals to identify the top ranked and highest impact journals in a particular field. It provides dynamic, interactive features supported by visualizations of JCR indicators that allow researchers to compare, evaluate and inform their decisions on published research in varying fields. 4

6 Finding a Journal in JCR
Enter your requested journal in the search box, e.g. Learning and Instruction Select the JCR year and the edition(s) of SCIE / SSCI or other fields 6

8 Key Indicators Provided by JCR
Total Cites Impact Factor 5-Year Impact Factor Immediacy Index Cited Half-Life Citing Half-Life Eigenfactor Score Article Influence Score and more …… In this workshop, we shall focus on the meaning of Impact Factor, which has been the most widely used JCR indicator for journal ranking. 8

9 What is Journal Impact Factor?
Journal Impact Factor is a simple statistics intended to reflect the “impact” of a journal. Basically it indicates the average number of times an article published in the particular journal during the past two years was being cited. Journal Impact Factor is based on the InCites Journal Citation Reports which is updated on annual basis. 9

10 Below is only a simplified explanation of the metrics
Below is only a simplified explanation of the metrics. For definitions and details, click the help in the JCR journal report pages Total Cites Total number of citations for this journal in the JCR year Impact Factor On average, how many times an article in this journal is being cited – based on articles published in the two previous years 5-Year Impact Factor On average, how many times an article in this journal is being cited – based on articles published in the five previous years Immediacy Index On average, how many times an article in this journal is being cited in the same year – based on last year's data (reflects more about the nature of the subject than journal quality) Cited Half-Life Indicates how far back the older articles in this journal are still being cited (reflects more about the nature of the subject than journal quality) 10

11 Below is only a simplified explanation of the metrics
Below is only a simplified explanation of the metrics. For definitions and details, click the help in the JCR journal report pages Citing Half-Life Indicates how recent or how old the bibliography referred by articles in this journal are (reflects more about the nature of the subject than journal quality) Eigenfactor Score The Eigenfactor Score is some kinds of enhanced 5-year impact factor – by giving higher score for getting cited in more influential journals and eliminates self-citation Article Influence Score The Article Influence Score is derived from the Eigenfactor Score based on matching the share of the journal's influence against the share of the journal's share of articles. The neutral influence score is 1.00 – thus a journal with article influence score greater than 1.00 indicates that each article in the journal has above-average influence and vice versa 11

12 Impact Factor for Different JCR Years
12

13 No. of items published in 2013 or 2014
Working Example: Impact Factor of Learning and Instruction (JCR SSCI 2015) = 3.692 Impact Factor = No. of Cites to 2013 or 2014 items in 2015 No. of items published in 2013 or 2014 13

14 Impact Factor Trend of a Journal

15 Journal Ranking by Impact Factor by JCR Subject Category
By default, journals are ranked by its current impact factor by subject NOTE: A journal can belong to more than one subject category; and therefore it is possible for a journal to have different ranks

What are the Impact Factor of these subject categories? What are the respective subject rankings of Early Childhood Research Quarterly in the respective subject categories? What is the full name of the highest ranked journal under the subject category “family studies" in JCR 2015 Social Sciences Edition? What is its Impact Factor? 23

43

44 Use Related Records to Identify Similar Articles
5,398 articles have at least one common citation with this Peisner-Feinberg’s 2001 article The more references the articles share, the more related they are 44

extract citation data from a selected field (e.g. source title, country, author), and produces a report showing the values in ranked order Create Citation Report view aggregate citation statistics for a set of search results e.g. breakdown of citations over years, average citations per year 48

49 Analysis Tools Analysis tools 49

50 1. Analyze Results Max number of items to display: top 500 results
You can rank the search results with different field options, e.g. source titles e.g. rank the journals by number of articles on this topic 50

51 2. Create Citation Report
Citation statistics of records found Most highly cited article 51

52 Exercise Search for articles with topic “mobile learning”
Analyze Results How many articles are found? What is the source title with the highest no. of publications? How many percentage of articles are published in 2016? Creation Citation Report How many times these articles have been cited? What is the average citations per year received by the top article? 52

53 Cited Reference Search
To discover how the works of an author are being cited How many citations received? Cited by whom? It can also cover the variant citation data in your search 53

54 Finding Citation Counts and Create Alerts for Works Not Indexed in Web of Science
Important Note: Citation data by Web of Science are only limited to citations recorded in the Web of Science indexed publications. Author Finder only finds the citation data for a particular researcher’s publications that are indexed by Web of Science. If your article is not indexed in Web of Science or may be it is a book, you can still check how many times it has been cited by Web of Science journals and create an alert using the "cited reference search" function. 54

55 Cited Reference Search
E.g. I want to know how many times the following book has been cited: Bond, M. H. (1991). Beyond the Chinese face: Insights from psychology. Hong Kong: Oxford University Press. 55

56 Click the "Cited Reference Search"
Under the search menu, select Cited Reference Search Use only Surname and initial(s); Chinese authors should consider using different variant forms (e.g. Cheung ABL or Cheung BL or Leung CB*) Use abbreviated journal titles only (click the “View abbreviation list” for reference). For books, suggest to leave this blank first 56

57 Select the relevant entries from the result list and then click "Finish Search"
57

58 Number of times cited in Web of Science = 322
Click "Create Citation Report" for quick summary of the 322 citing articles 58

60 Create Citation Alert Email alerts / RSS feeds
Sign up for your free account first 60

61 Modify the Cited Reference Search for Future Email Alerts
Based on what has been entered for the 322 citations, enter the "cited work" field with what Web of Science uses (Use "*" and "or" as necessary) 61

62 Click "Select All" and "Finish Search"
62

63 Use the "Save History / Create Alert" option to set up alerts
Select search history Use the "Save History / Create Alert" option to set up alerts Delete unwanted search history Enter History Name and select desired options. Make sure you have checked the Alerts option 63

64 Hands-on Practice Try Cited Reference Search or set up a Citation Alert on anything that interest you – a piece of your work, a key paper related to your research topic, etc. 64

From the results screen: you can also change the sorting order (default order is by date) Various Output Options like Export, Print, or Create a Bibliography Check EdLINK for Full Text Availability 72

73 A Scopus detailed record
Like Web of Science, citing articles are offered s / RSS Alerts can also be set up A Scopus detailed record 73

74 A Scopus detailed record
Like Web of Science, related articles are offered (a list of all documents that share references with the document you selected) A Scopus detailed record 74

75 CiteScore Metrics for Serials in Scopus
Search by Source Title 75

76 CiteScore calculates the average number of citations received in a calendar year by all items published in that journal in the preceding three years. 76
