National QuorumTM Question Regarding AFM’s Marriage Amendment
Q: 1 There has been some discussion, recently, about how marriage should be defined in the U.S. I am going to read you the wording of a possible amendment to the U.S. Constitution and then ask you for whether you would favor or oppose such an amendment. The amendment says: ”Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this constitution, nor the constitution of any state, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.” Do you favor or oppose this amendment? (And is that strongly favor / oppose or just somewhat favor / oppose?) Methodology: 1,000 U.S. adults interviewed via telephone, April 2-5, 2004, margin of error ± 3.1%.
