1 Energy -All living things need energy for growth and movement.
Work is: using a force to move an object a distance. In order for organisms to do work they need energy.

2 What is energy? The ability to do work and/or cause change.

3 Energy There are 2 main types of energy:
Potential Energy & Kinetic Energy

4 Potential Energy Potential Energy is the energy stored in an object. It depends on its position (location) and its condition (new battery vs. used battery.) Examples: Batteries • Gasoline • Food • Plant on a windowsill • Acorn hanging on a tree

5 Potential Energy Potential energy is stored energy so it is used to “run” many things for example – Gasoline “runs” cars , Batteries “run” our toys/

6 Some FORMS OF POTENTIAL ENERGY
Chemical Energy: Energy created through a chemical reaction. Ex. Digestion, burning objects etc. Gravitational Energy: energy based on the pull of gravity. The higher an object is the more potential energy it has.

7 -Energy created by a moving object. Depends on speed and mass.
Kinetic Energy -Energy created by a moving object. Depends on speed and mass. Examples: Person running • Bicycle wheel spinning • Frisbee flying in the air

8 Some FORMS OF Kinetic ENERGY
-Thermal (Heat) Energy): Energy created by the motion of an object. Ex. Rubbing your hands together. Electrical Energy: Energy created by electric charges. Ex. Light switch

9 Kinetic and Potential energy Click Pictures for videos

10 Mechanical Energy Mechanical energy is potential and chemical energy together. Mechanical energy can be either kinetic (energy of motion) or potential (energy of position). Click pic for video

11 Law of conservation of energy Click the picture
1 – Energy can not be created nor destroyed, only changed. 2 – Energy will always transfer from high to low. 3 – No energy transfer is 100% efficient. Law of conservation of energy Click the picture
