3 Cumulative Number of Energy-Star Product Models registered in Japan (As of March 2002)
Number of registered companies Computers 40 Monitors 56 Number of models Printers 58 Fax Machines 27 Copiers 13 Scanners 15 21 Multifunction Devices This is Cumulative Number of Energy-Star Product Models registered in Japan. As you see, large number(approximately 15,000) of products are registered in Japan.and 100companies registered. The right side table indicates that number of registered companies in respective product. During the past six years, registered models of seven equipment products together number over 15,000. The program currently has about 100 registered companies. ECCJ

5 Procedure to remove product model names from the Web site (1)
1. Listing of the target models ECCJ makes a list of models that have been on the Web site for more than four years and presents it to the industry associations and non-member registered companies. 2. Distribution of the list The industry associations distribute the list to the respective member companies. 3. Selection of specific models to be removed Each registered company checks the list and selects the specific models to be removed, and reports to the industry associations. ECCJ

6 Procedure to remove product model names from the Web site (2)
4. Submission of the model names to be removed The industry associations collect the lists from respective member companies and submit them to ECCJ. (Non-member companies submit them directly to ECCJ.) 5. Removal of models from the Web site ECCJ removes the models from the Web site, not from its original database, in accordance with the submitted list. 6. Recounting of the official number of registered models The official number of the models that ECCJ announces to the public is the number of the models listed on the Web site. The removed models from the Web site are no longer counted. ECCJ

7 Overview of Energy Conservation Law
Implementation Method Revised: June Enforced: April 1999 Revised: June Enforced: April 1999 New Information Guidelines for Energy Management Key Point Industrial sector • 1st class designated energy management factories • 1st class designated energy management factories • 2nd class designated energy management factories Energy Labeling Program Residential / Commercial sector • Electric home appliances (5 Items) Next Topic is Energy Conservation Law. This law is applied to 3 sectors. Top runner program is applied to 2 sectors, which are Residential and Commercial sector, and transportation sector. And to achieve the target of the law,for example we use energy labeling program. Top Runner Programs Advanced DSM Transportation sector Top Runner Programs

12 Overview of Energy-saving Labeling Program
Under the current “Energy Efficiency Law” in Japan, manufacturers are obligated to display the information of a product, such as product name, model name, energy efficiency rate, and power consumption for the designated products. The objective is to help consumers readily compare and choose energy efficient products when purchasing. “Energy-saving Labeling Program,” which has been implemented since August in 2000, serves as a complement to the obligation under the Law. It is introduced as a tool for consumers to actually make a relative comparison of the energy efficiency of the products. This program has covered only home electronic appliances. Electric appliances for business use are not covered, because, in most companies, a purchasing administration department whose staffs have expertise in energy efficiency is assigned to choose and purchase energy efficient products. Currently, “Energy–saving Labeling Program” is promoted as a voluntary program based on JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards). Japanese government will consider expanding Top Runner program in accordance with additional product items.

15 Specified products for purchase
Various programs related to energy-saving in electrical appliances and office equipment in Japan Law on Promoting Green Purchasing This law stipulates basic items for encouraging the national government and independent administrative organizations to purchase products (eco-friendly goods) that are beneficial in reducing the burden on our environment. The target products <Specified items for purchase> (101 products in total of 14 items) Energy Conservation Law This law obligates those involved in the manufacture and import of energy-consuming equipment to improve the equipment’s energy efficiency. The target products <Equipment specified by the Energy Conservation Law> Air conditioners, Televisions, VCRs, Refrigerators, Freezers, Fluorescent lamp luminaries, Copiers, Computers, Magnetic disk units, Gasoline-fueled passenger cars, Gasoline-fueled freight vehicles, Diesel-fueled passenger cars, Diesel-fueled freight vehicles. Items Specified products for purchase Papers Data paper,Printing paper,Hygiene paper(toilet paper) Office equipment Computers,Printers,Fax machines,Copiers, etc. Home appliances Refrigerators,Air conditioners,Televisions,VCRs Energy Saving-Labeling Program This is a program that displays on labels the degree to which home electric appliances have reached energy saving standards stipulated by the “Energy Conservation Law.” The target products <Five electric home appliances> Air conditioners, Fluorescent lamp luminaries, Televisions, Refrigerators, Freezers. Illumination Fluorescent lamp luminaries,Fluorescent light bulbs Automobiles Natural gas vehicles,Hybrid vehicles, etc. Nine other items in addition to the above. Eco Mark Program The Japan Environment Association, under the direction of Japanese Ministry of the Environment, is conducting this project in order to achieve the diffusion and education of products that protect the environment. The mark is labeled on products recognized as being environment-friendly. The target products <Number and varieties of products> (68 items) In addition to office equipment (computers (including monitors),printers, copiers), there are 65 other recognized products varieties(home appliances are not included in this category) Left side 3 programs are administered under METI. Right side 2 programs are administered under Ministry of Environment. Energy-saving Label International Energy Star Program The target products <Seven office equipment> Computers, Monitors, Printers, Fax machines, Copiers, Multifunction Devices, Scanners.
