Activity 35 Building in Boomtown
Challenge: Where should Boomtown build its new apartments and houses>

In addition to the geologist reports from Activity 34, reports from an engineer, ecologist and a City Council Member, and the opinions of the town residents were collected. Scenario The City Council has asked builders to make presentations about each of the locations. The presenter’s role is to use information from the reports to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each site. Each builder has been asked to provide a plan to ensure that the buildings would have a minimal impact on the land.

Day 1 Procedure: Read the introduction on page 52. Read all the reports for your assigned location. Complete Student sheet 35.1 to identify the advantages and disadvantages of your location Begin preliminary planning of your building plan

Day 2 Procedure: Prepare your building plans. Make sure to include:
Information from the geologist, engineer, ecologist, and City Council Member. Your poster should include: The advantages of your building site, based on evidence from this activity and earlier activities in the unit. The main disadvantages or risks of your proposed building site How your plan will succeed despite the disadvantages of your building site.

During presentations, audience members need to listen, take notes, and ask questions of the presenters so that you will be prepared to make a decision about where to build after all the presentations have been made. Use Student Sheet 35.2 to record what you learn. Remember, when we are through, you will each have to write your individual reports on where to build and why! Presentations
