1925- entered Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham College) graduated with honors, earning a scholarship to continue her studies at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD M.A. in Zoology from John Hopkins University.

The youngest of three children, Rachel Carson had a rugged upbringing in a simple farmhouse outside the western Pennsylvania river town of Springdale. She credited her mother with introducing her to the world of nature that became her lifelong passion.

She approached Readers digest to write an article about pesticides and their harmful effects but readers digest rejected her so she wrote a book and had it published (silent spring) Chemical companies fought her on her claim that DDT was a harmful pesticide. The companies were a billion dollar business The pesticide industry reacted with a massive campaign to discredit Carson and her findings. Firmly and gently, she spent the next 2 years educating the public at large While very ill. Was endorsed by JFKs science advisory committee and the modern environment movement was born.
