1 Cell Cycle

2 Cell cycle 5 steps in the cell cycle Interphase G S Mitosis
The time the cell does everything accept mitosis G S Mitosis Cytokinesis

3 Cell Cycle!

4 Interphase Cell spends 90% of its time in this phase

5 5 stages to the cell cycle
Stage one: First growth (G1) phase. Grows rapidly and carries out its routine functions. The cell spends a majority of its time in this phase.

6 5 stages to the cell cycle
Stage two Synthesis (S) phase: Cell’s DNA is copied. This means there are two chromatids attached at the centromere. Synthesis

7 5 stages to the cell cycle
Second Growth (G2) phase: Preparations made for the nucleus to divide. Microtubules form.

8 5 stages to the cell cycle
Stage 4 Mitosis (M) phase When the nucleus divides into two nuclei Each nucleus ends up with the same number and kinds of chromosomes.

9 5 stages to the cell cycle
Stage 5: Cytokinesis (C) When the cytoplasm divides

10 Controlling the Cell Cycle
G1 Checkpoint This is the check point that decides if conditions in the cell are favorable to divide. This checkpoint can send cells to G0. DNA synthesis G2 Checkpoint DNA is checked for copied completion. Mitosis checkpoint This triggers the exit from mitosis, and the start of G1

11 Lost Control Cancer cells Uncontrolled growth of cells
Environmental factors or genetic factors
