1 Intro to Organic Chemistry

2 CLASSIFICATION Organic Compounds: Compounds that contain carbon (there are a few exceptions) Inorganic Compounds: Compounds that are not classified as organic

3 CLASSIFICATION GUIDELINES
Always contain C and almost always H May contain non-metals, but does NOT contain metals Covalently bonded

4 **NOT ALL COMPOUNDS THAT CONTAIN CARBON ARE ORGANIC!!!**
WARNING!!! **NOT ALL COMPOUNDS THAT CONTAIN CARBON ARE ORGANIC!!!** Ex: CO2 = no hydrogen, therefore NOT ORGANIC Ex: NaHCO3 = presence of metal, therefore NOT ORGANIC

5 PROPERTIES OF CARBON Over HALF the known compounds are organic (ie. Contain carbon)!! What makes carbon so special?

6 PROPERTIES OF CARBON Carbon can form several bonds with other atoms as well as itself. Having 4 valence electrons allows carbon to: Form strong single, double, and triple covalent bonds with itself Form long chains

7 HYDROCARBONS Contains only C and H Components of natural gas, camping fuels, gasoline, and beeswax ALCOHOLS Contains O and H bonded covalently NOT A BASE Ex. CH3CH2OH is ethanol

8 ORGANIC MODELS Ball-and-Stick Space-Filled Structural Formula

9 ORGANIC MODEL ACTIVITY
Turn to page 249 In groups you will work through the activity and draw out the structural formula
