2 Guantanamo Bay Prison Prison in Cuba for terrorists from Afghanistan and Iraq US Naval Base is located there; prison established b/c it is away from U.S. soil Status of prisoners debated: criminals, prisoners of war, ??? Prisoners initially held without trial or lawyers; US officials accused of cruel interrogation techniques

3 Guantanamo Bay Prison In 2009, President Obama ordered Guantanamo Bay to be shut down, but Congress would not allow prisoners to be moved to US for trials In March 2011, Obama reversed the order and allowed trials by military tribunal to resume, with some important revisions to the process used during the Bush administration

4 Guantanamo Controversy Continues
Of the 779 people who have been detained at the United States military prison at Guantánamo, 604 have been transferred to other countries and 166 remain. In addition, nine detainees died while in custody.

5 Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Created in 1948 by the United Nations Recognizes basic human rights and freedoms Supported by organizations like Amnesty International Challenged by many governments At issue with Guantanamo Bay prison

6 Refugees People who flee their countries due to war, natural disaster, political oppression Neighboring countries often can’t handle large numbers of refugees and therefore house them in refugee camps Examples: Palestinians, Afghanistan, Sudan, Somalia, Haiti, etc.

Major protests also took place in Bahrain, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, and Sudan Characterized by civil protests and the use of social media; governments have frequently reacted with violence, leading to violence by protesters as well
