1 Hawks Aloft, Inc. Fire Avian Monitoring for Jemez Collaborative Landscape Forest Restoration Project

2 Monitoring Objectives:
Forest Landscape Restoration Act (PL , Sec. 4003(c)), the natural resources monitoring program objectives are: (1) contribute toward the restoration of the structure and composition of pre-fire-suppression old growth stands, (2) reduce the risk of uncharacteristic wildfire, and/or maintain or re-establish natural fire regimes, (3) improve fish and wildlife habitat, including endangered, threatened and sensitive species, (4) maintain or improve water quality and watershed function, and (5) prevent, remediate, or control invasions of exotic species.

4 Project Challenges: Inability to access all routes during all years due to fires/flooding/washed out roads.

9 Expected outcomes and timeframe:
Following fire, we expect an initial decline in avian density and species richness in the year following the fire with a robust increase in years 3-10 years as herbaceous plant cover matures.

10 Observed outcomes: In burned ponderosa pine, there was a significant increase in avian density in burned points relative to control points. Although not yet significant, our data show increases in density among all burned points.
