2 Strategic Plans: in the beginning…
The Schlieffen Plan- Germany’s strategy send forces through Belgium and quickly capture Paris, defeating France in 6 weeks, then turning all German forces on Russia. The Problems: Belgium resisted and slowed German invasion Russia mobilized more quickly than expected, forcing German forces east Britain Expeditionary Force aided France at Mons France Plan 17- planned to deeply invade Germany forcing surrender

3 Problems: August to December
France (and British forces) Failure of Plan 17 & 8/20 France lost Alsace-Lorraine to Germany, regrouped to defend Paris Germany Sup. Com. Moltke pulled 100,000 troops from Paris to battle Russia who invaded Germany Mobilized too quickly, no supplies, poor soldier morale and health

4 Stalemate! French and British forces pushed Germany back to the River Aisne, by 9/8 trenches were dug, barbed wire placed and movement stopped!

5 Race to the Sea October 12- New German Sup. Com., Falkenhayn tried to ‘outflank’ FranBri Troops (source 18) Battle of Ypres (Belgium) Brits (Haig) held English Channel Ports allowing supplies STALEMATE!!!! In the Trenches of the Western Front!!!
