2 Revising Keys to Effective Revising
A first draft can usually be improved in a number of ways. Paragraphs may need to be shifted around and part of the argument may need to be clearer. You revise your writing in order to fix problems like these. Keys to Effective Revising Read through your entire draft to get a feeling of how well your essay works. Make sure your positions is stated clearly. Check your paragraph to make sure your topic sentences support your position and your evidence supports your topic sentences. Fine-tune your voice to sound confident and convincing. Check your words and sentences. Use the editing and proofreading marks inside the back cover of the book.

3 Revising for Focus and Coherence
When your revise for focus and coherence, you make sure you have written about one position at the beginning. You continue to clarify your position throughout your essay by providing sound reasoning with detailed evidence to support it. This will help convince others to agree with you.

4 Is my Beginning Clear and Focused
Your opening paragraph should grab the reader’s attentions about your cause and then clearly state your position. Don’t include unnecessary information. Stay focused on your position statement. Check your persuasive essay. Review your essay. Look for sentences or larger units of text that do not directly support your position. Delete these sentences or text units form your writing. Revise your paper so that it is clear and flows smoothly from one idea to the next.

You stay focused by including only sound reasoning and detailed and relevant evidence to support your position. Read the position statement. Then review each of the detail sentences. Which sentence would support the position and keep the essay focused and coherent? ->

Position Statement: Only healthy treats should be allowed at school. Healthy treats are my favorite. Research shows that healthy treats improve memory. Junk food has been shown to cause health problems like obesity. The cost of school lunches should remain the same next year. Eating healthy treats in school promotes a healthy lifestyle. Check your details: Make sure your details, reasons, and evidence support your position and help your convince others to support your cause. Delete sentences that don’t apply or break the flow or ideas.

When you check your essay’s organization, look for a smooth flow of ideas both within each paragraph and form one paragraph to the next. Use transitional words phrases to help the organization of your writing. How can I check the transitions in my sentences? To check your sentences for transition words and phrases, read them carefully, making certain that each sentences moves logically into the next.

Kids will come to enjoy and respect the world of nature.

Transitional words and phrases can help show how the ideas in one paragraph are related to the ideas in others. Read the topic sentences below form a persuasive essay about importing a neighborhood playground. As you’ll see, the transitional words and phrases (in blue) show how the paragraphs’ ideas are related. To begin with, the playground at 6th Street and Rio Grande is a health hazard. In addition, the playground is an eyesore. Finally, fixing up the playground will send a positive message to neighborhood kids.

When you revise for development of ideas, you will want to make sure you position in clear and supported by sound reasoning and detailed, relevant evidence, It is also imported to present possible alternative action to support your position.

How can I recognize “fuzzy thinking” in my writing? You have used fuzzy thinking when an ideas is not sound and cannot be supported with derailed, relevant evidence, This makes it difficult to establish you position. Here are three types of fuzzy thinking. Jumping to Conclusion: Avoid using reasoning that is not sound to read a big conclusion. Bandwagoning: Avoid using a group’s opinions as if it were relevant evidence. Take it, or Leave it: Avoid statements that do leave room for discussion.

14 How can qualifiers make my ideas easier to support?
Ideas that suggest “all” or “nothing” and difficult to support and do not allow for consideration of alternatives. That’s why qualifiers- terms such as most and usually – are important in persuasive writing. Read the two ideas below. Notice the qualifier in the second sentence Students in study hall can’t work because of lunchroom noise. Many students in study hall can’t work because of lunchroom noise. The qualifier many limits the idea, making it easier to support. It also opens the possibility to consider alternative that an “all” or “nothing” position does not allow. Other helpful qualifiers include most, often, usually, some, ad in may cases.

15 Revising for Voice When your revise for voice, check to see though your essay sounds. You should try to sound authentic and original with your own writing style. You want your individual personality to show through.
