Spring 2016 Course Overview

2 Course Description Hospitality Industry Financial Accounting will provide the basic knowledge of financial accounting systems in a hospitality environment

3 Course Objectives A basic understanding of accounting principles
An understanding of the development of financial accounting systems An understanding of the preparation of accounting transactions, adjusting entries, the balance sheet, the income statement, and accounting ledgers

4 Course Objectives An understanding of the various forms of business organizations and basic accounting for each Understanding the concepts of cash accounting, receivables and payables accounting, inventory accounting, FF&E accounting and payroll accounting

Accounting for Business Transactions Accounting Principles Accounting Adjustments Completing the Accounting Cycle Subsidiary Ledgers and Special Journals

6 Topics to be Covered Part II The Income Statement The Balance Sheet
Financial Statement Analysis and Interpretation

7 Topics to be Covered Part III Cash and Internal Controls
Receivables and Payables Inventories & Cost Calculations Current Liabilities and Payroll Property Plant and Other Assets (Depreciation)

8 Topics to be Covered Part IV Statement of Cash Flows Bonds and Leases

9 Grading Criteria Exam 1 15.0% Exam 2 15.0% Exam 3 15.0%

10 Grading Criteria A 94.0% - 100% A- 90.0% - 93.9% B+ 87.0% - 89.9%
D % to 66.9% F Less than or equal to 59.9% Grades will be given out in person only.

11 Expectations Completion of homework assignments on time Participation
Attendance will be taken for each class (Before and after break) Bring a calculator. No cell phones. Assignment schedule “subject to change” Website: For copies of power points, worksheets, etc.

3/7-3/11 Spring Break 3/14 Exam 2 (See Note) 4/11 Exam 3 (See Note) 4/27 Study Day – No Class 5/2 Final Exam 7:00 to 9:50 pm Note: Except for the first day of class, last day of class, final exam and holidays, dates may be subject to change

13 Important Policies Attendance Counts – You must be present to win
Financial Aid Make up Policy for Quizzes & Exams Quizzes – No make up. Lowest quiz grade dropped Exams – No make up. The grade for a missed exam will be 50% of the final exam grade.
