2 Research Professionally trained school library media specialists have a positive effect on student achievement. Library media specialists need teacher and principal support in order to be most effective. Support staff is essential if library media specialists are to fully affect student achievement.

3 Here are some of the keys to our SUCCESS!
Research cont. Library media specialists serve as both teachers of students and in-service providers for teachers. Effective library media specialists serve a key role in expanding access to information technology beyond the library and into the classrooms. Here are some of the keys to our SUCCESS!

4 Smart library media specialists that work full-time
Full Time library media specialists (1 per building)‏ Certified in library & information studies, some with Master’s Degrees Many serve on building, district & state committees

5 Up-to-date, large and varied collections

6 Computers and other technology made accessible
Each library media specialist supports: At least 20 computers in addition to SmartBoards, projectors, digital cameras, & digital camcorders Also provides in-service training to staff on using the technology

7 Cash…or a budget adequate to support the functions of the library
Common School Fund- State Aid for libraries to purchase library materials District monies for supplies & new technologies

8 Extensive collaboration between the library media specialist and teachers
Work with teachers to incorporate Information Literacy Standards into Curriculum Co-Teach lessons On average teaches 20 classes per week

9 Support Staff who free the library media specialists from doing clerical duties
Allows library media specialist more time to work with students, staff, and manage the collection At least one full-time aide in each building

10 Student and staff use beyond scheduled classes; during and beyond the school day
Before and after school hours Flexibility during the school day

11 Yes, we’ve had much SUCCESS in the D. C
Yes, we’ve had much SUCCESS in the D.C. Everest School Library Media Centers, and we’re not done yet!

12 Our Future Library Goals:
Maintain appropriate staffing trained in current methods and technologies Maintain high quality, diverse, and up-to-date collections Maintain current funding and explore options for new and creative sources of funding to enhance the program

13 Library Goals (cont.)‏ Utilize best-practice and research-based instruction methods that are guided by student achievement data Continue integration of information and technology skills into content areas Create more open-ended, problem-solving lesson plans that widen student-learning options
