2 What is Skills Commons?

3 Skills Commons Repository holding all uploaded materials created with TAACCCT funds. Free and open online library created by the Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) program Contains free and open learning materials and program support materials for job-driven workforce development Must be Licensed prior to being uploaded through Creative Commons Resources can be found, reused, revised, retained, redistributed and remixed by individuals, institutions, and industry. Can be re-uploaded to the site after licensing.

Open Educational Resources Defined: “OER are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. Open educational resources include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge.” 1 1Hewlett Foundation. 6 Why is the DOL mandating OER?
Partnering with the Department of Education Increase the impact of their investment Grantees can utilize previously funded creative works to develop new programs and meet similar objectives Materials that individuals create can be shared by other TAACCCT grantees and the world Decrease the time to program implementation by sharing grant funded works Stewardship DOL wants to be a good steward of public funds PUBLIC FUNDING=PUBLIC ACCESS “With $2 billion over 4 years, TAACCCT is the largest OER initiative in the world.”2 2Workforce One Webinar, 15 Apr 2015 Meeting notes/PowerPoint

7 Resources can be found, reused, revised, retained, redistributed and remixed by individuals, institutions, and industry. What to do? Go onto the website and look for resources that are related to your course of study. You can search by college, by topic, by name or by resource (syllabi, nursing skill sheets, manufacturing videos, simulation equipment, etc.) You can download and use material, reuse it, and modify it/them to suit your needs Answer the survey if you download something- research needed to keep this resource up and running!
