2 Using Logic Gates 14-Sep-15
Learning Goals To understand that inputs can either be on or off and that we use 1 or 0 to denote this (binary) To recognise that we can use a logic gate to change a signal To understand what a NOT, AND and OR logic gate will do in a circuit To use truth tables to decide what the output will be in a range of different situations with different logic gates

3 Use the worksheet and the ‘Decision Module’ Board to undertake your practical and answer the questions on the worksheet on the AND and OR gates

4 The doors on this safe are controlled by groups of push switches called logic gates. The buttons need to be pressed in the correct order otherwise the alarm will go off. This mechanism will be controlled by a circuit with logic gates.

8 Logic Gates Truth Table Challenge
P A B C P Input A Output P Input B Output C Input A Output P Input B Output C Challenge 3 Challenge 4 A B D C P 1 A B D C P Input A Output P Input B Output D Input A Output P Input B Output D Input C Input C For this challenge you need to work out output D first then work out what the output P is when D and C are inputted. Extra Challenge In a Word document you need to copy one of your logic gates and tables above and explain HOW you calculated the table. Imagine you are trying to teach a non geek how to complete the truth table

9 Using the same method that you did for the previous set of situations, create logic diagrams and truth tables for the following situations. Create a logic diagram for a shop owner who wants a buzzer to sound when either the temperature inside the shop gets to high or if someone turns on a light whilst pressing down a pressure switch under the door mat to ‘on’. Create a logic diagram and truth table for a display window which will have a light going on when it is switched on or if it is both dark and cold. Create a logic diagram and truth table for a heater to be turned on when it is cold and when it is either dark or switched on.
