The location of volcanoes is mostly determined by plate tectonics.
Zones of Volcanism:
Magma is slushy mixture of molten rock, minerals, crystals and gasses.
Lava is magma that reaches Earth’s surface.
Volcanism is all the processes associated with the discharge of magma, hot fluids and gasses.

Where magma rises to Earth’s surface.
Convergent Volcanism:
Tectonic plates collide to form a subduction zone.
Where one plate descends below the other.

As descending plate (oceanic plate) goes under, it melts and creates new magma.
Magma moves upward because it is less dense than surrounding material.
As it rises magma mixes with rock, minerals, and sediments from overlying plate.
Land volcanoes result from oceanic- continent convergence.
