3. The Behaviour Challenge - the (Labour) Government’s Commitment to Good Behaviour
Every parent wants to know that their child will be safe and happy at school and every child has the right to learn in a well-run, orderly school, with good behaviour in every classroom.
In the White Paper ‘Building a 21st century schools system’ we have set out a guarantee to every pupil and parent (underpinned by legislation) that in their school there will be good behaviour, strong discipline, order and safety. As a result of the steps already taken, the great majority of schools already have good or outstanding behaviour and the number of schools with inadequate standards of behaviour is at the lowest level ever recorded. However, it is unacceptable for the learning of any class to be disrupted by the bad behaviour of one or two pupils.

The central elements of the behaviour strategy are:
the new Behaviour Challenge, through which schools that have only a 'satisfactory' Ofsted grade for behaviour will be encouraged and supported to work towards the 'good' or 'outstanding' standard
making behaviour improvement a priority for the Good and Great Schools programme
engaging parents through a new leaflet on how they can work with schools on pupil-behaviour issues.

6. The Behaviour Challenge also takes forward the commitments in the 21st- Century Schools White Paper on the Pupil Guarantee, about every pupil going to a school where there is good behaviour, strong discipline, order and safety; and the Parent Guarantee, about ensuring parents fulfil their responsibilities for pupil behaviour.

7. Activity 1.
In your groups you will be given a section of the Behaviour Challenge document. Divide this up between pairs or 3s.
In pairs (or 3s)– read your section
Then discuss with others in your group to build up a picture of what that section of the report puts forward.
Jigsaw so that everyone gets to know what is in each others section. Collate key messages of the document.
Consider the issues for practice in school and for you as a student teacher.

12. For SE block practice – continue to
Arrive at the school on time – try to get there in time to help set up the classroom.
Present a confident, professional first impression.
Demonstrate familiarity with school routines and staff habits – this will make you feel confident and more “at home”.
Demonstrate familiarity with your class timetable and routines.
Check when you will be expected to go out with the teacher on “playground duty.”
Try to navigate your way around the school independently.
