From: Behavioral Effects of Volatile Anesthetics in Caenorhabditis elegans
Anesthes. 1996;85(4): Figure Legend: Figure 3. Halothane-induced defecation and pharyngeal pumping defects. (A) Defecation occurs every 42 +/- 4.7 s [34]and is composed of three steps: posterior body contraction (pBoc), anterior body contraction (aBoc), followed by expulsion (exp) of gut contents. A step in the cycle was scored as defective if it was not observed during a 60-s period (4 sd greater than mean cycle time in air). Each animal was scored for four cycles. The mean +/- SEM of the fraction of defective cycles for ten animals per [Hal] is plotted. (B) Pharyngeal pumping (eating behavior) consists of a rapid anterior/posterior oscillatory movement of the pharynx at a rate of 3 to 5 pumps/s in the presence of food. Animals were scored as pumping defective if the mean pumping rate during the 30-s observation period was slower than 1 hz, which is the rate of a denervated pharynx. [26]The percentage of pumping-defective animals (n = 10 at each [Hal]) along with the cycle time in seconds/pump (mean +/- SEM) for those ten animals is plotted.
