2. Paraphrase vs. Summary
To paraphrase is to write another person’s words in your own words; in doing so, it is vitally important to change the wording and sentence structure while still conveying the same thought or idea
To summarize is to condense the main points of an entire article into a short, concise version

3. Summary
There are no specific rules for the length of a summary, unless the length is specified by an instructor
Generally speaking:
A paragraph can be summarized into a sentence
An essay can be summarized into a short paragraph
A long piece of writing can be summarized into 1-2 paragraphs

4. Paraphrasing
A paraphrase will generally be the same length as the original source:
If paraphrasing a sentence, the paraphrase should be approximately one sentence
If paraphrasing an entire paragraph, several sentences should be necessary
It is extremely rare to paraphrase anything more than a paragraph at a time

5. When and How to Use Them
A summary is used to introduce a source, usually near the beginning of a body paragraph in which the source will be cited
A paraphrase is used as evidence to support the topic sentences in the body paragraphs of an essay; they are used in the same way as direct quotations
