3 Objective Today we will learn to identify and write different kinds of complete sentences. What is a sentence?

4 What is a Sentence? A sentence is a group of words that makes sense.
A sentence expresses complete thought. A sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a symbol. A sentence has at least one verb, an action word. Example: Sam went to the store.

5 Declarative The Four Imperative Interrogative Kinds of Sentences
Exclamatory

6 Declarative Sentences
A declarative sentence makes a statement. It ends with a period. Examples: The boy is happy. The people are running.

7 Interrogative Sentences
An interrogative sentence asks a question. It ends with a question mark (?). Examples: May I borrow your newspaper? Did you turn off the light?

8 Imperative Sentences An imperative sentence gives a command or makes a request. It ends with a period (.) or an exclamation point (!). Examples: Stop. Go to your room!

9 Exclamatory Sentences
An exclamatory sentence expresses a strong feeling. It ends with an exclamation mark (!). Examples: Wow! That’s great news! The white tiger is extremely rare!

10 Review There are four kinds of sentences.
A declarative sentence makes a statement. It ends with a period. An interrogative sentence asks a question. It ends with a question mark. An imperative sentence gives a command or makes a request. It ends with a period. An exclamatory sentence expresses a strong feeling. It ends with an exclamation mark.

11 Your Turn Directions: Rewrite the following sentences. Add the correct end mark and identify what kind of sentence it is. What is your favorite song The eagle is flying A tiger escaped from the zoo Hand me that book about wild cats

Interrogative The eagle is flying. Declarative A tiger escaped from the zoo! Exclamatory Hand me that book about wild cats. Imperative

13 Group Assignment Each group will be given a type of sentence to research. Use pages L7-L8 to research your type of sentence. Record your findings on the large YELLOW post it note. You will need the following information on your poster: Name of Sentence Definition of Sentence Punctuation Used 2 Examples (Not from the book) After 15 minutes, your group will present your sentence to the class. 

Write four sentences for each type of sentence: declarative, interrogative, exclamatory and imperative. After you write a sentence illustrate your sentence. Make sure your illustrations are colorful and neat.
