Cell apoptosis and death, mechanical loss, and cell escape from the site of transplantation are the major factors in a low rate of cell engraftment and survival in the ischemic heart. Inhibition of apoptosis or promotion of cell survival by preconditioning, genetic modification, microencapsulation, magnetic targeting, and myocardial tissue engineering have been attempted to improve cell engraftment and subsequent recovery of cardiac function.
