Grids, Polygons, Triangles, Attributes of Quadrilaterals, and Special Quadrilaterals Study Guide By Miss Jamison and Mrs. Bufkin

2 Vocabulary Coordinate grid-is used to plot and name the locations of points in a plane. X-axis-the line that is horizontal on a coordinate grid. Y-axis-the line that is vertical on a coordinate grid. Origin-the point at which the x-axis and y-axis intersect. Ordered Pair-a point in a plane is named by using this. X-Coordinate-the first number in the ordered pair that names the distance from the origin along the x-axis. Y-Coordinate-the second number in the ordered pair that names the distance from the origin along the y-axis.

3 Examples Y-axis X-axis Origin

4 Examples Point A is 3 units to the right of the origin and 5 unites up from the origin. X Y (3,5)

5 Vocabulary Polygon-is a closed plane figure made up of line segments.
Regular Polygon-has sides of equal length and angles of equal measure. Examples of Polygons: Triangles (3 sides), Quadrilaterals (4 sides), Pentagon (5 sides), Hexagon (6 sides), Octagon (8 sides).

6 Examples

7 Vocabulary Equilateral Triangle- all sides are the same length.
Isosceles Triangle- two sides are the same length. Scalene Triangle- no sides are the same length. Right Triangle- one angle is a right angle. Acute Triangle- all three angles are acute angles. Obtuse Triangle- one angle is an obtuse angle. A triangles angles add up to be 180 degrees.

8 Examples

9 Examples

10 Vocabulary Parallelogram-both pairs of opposite sides are parallel and equal in length. Trapezoid- only one pair of parallel sides. Rectangle- a parallelogram with four right angles. All rectangles are parallelograms. Rhombus- a parallelogram all sides the same length. Square- a rectangle with all sides the same length. A square can aslo be called a rhombus or a rectangle.

11 Vocabulary If a quadrilateral has two pairs of consecutive equal angles it is a trapezoid. Example: 60 degrees 120 degrees 120 degrees 60 degrees. This would be a trapezoid because 120 degrees is right by each other. If a quadrilateral has two pairs of opposite equal angles it is a parallelogram. Example: 60 degrees 120 degrees 60 degrees 120 degrees. This would be a parallelogram because the 60 degrees and 120 degrees are not next to its equal.

12 Examples

13 Vocabulary Trapezoid- has exactly one pair of parallel sides.
Parallelogram- has two pairs of opposite sides parallel and equal. Rectangle- has four right angles. Rhombus-has all sides the same length. Square-has all sides the same length.

14 Examples Name the following polygons as many names as possible.
Quadrilateral, parallelogram, Quadrilateral, parallelogram, rectangle
