“Short-Lived Sorrow” John 16:16-33 01/07/2007 Dr. Dane Boyles

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 16 “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.” 17 Some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” (John 16:16-17)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. (John 16:20-21)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. (John 16:22-23)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 32 “But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. 33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:32-33)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” One of the marks of spiritual maturity is the ability to judge matters by long-term consequences rather than immediate rewards. It’s easy to misinterpret who is ahead and who is losing without a long- range perspective. What appears to be success could be failure in disguise.

“Short-Lived Sorrow” We should base our conclusions on long-range consequences and not short-term pleasures. The key word is “Discernment.” It’s the ability to distinguish the permanent from the temporary, the seen from the unseen.

“Short-Lived Sorrow” The World’s Joy is Short-lived.
Official religion hated Christ. He exposed their ignorance. 23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you this authority?” (Matt 21:23)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 24 Jesus replied, “I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. (Matt 21:24)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 25 John’s baptism-where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or from men?” They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ (Matt 21:25)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 26 But if we say, ‘From men’-we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.” (Mt. 21:26-27)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” He exposed their sin.
He exposed the sins of their hearts. He told them that they were careful about things that didn’t matter, but they were tolerant of sins they enjoyed.

“Short-Lived Sorrow” The world saw the death of Christ as good news, but they were blinded to the bad news. Christ was dead, but He wouldn’t stay dead! The world looks at life through the wrong end of the telescope. The devil’s Christmas (Rev 11:7-11).

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 7 Now when they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up from the Abyss will attack them, and overpower and kill them. 8 Their bodies will lie in the street of the great city, which is figuratively called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. (Rev 11:7-8)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 9 For three and a half days men from every people, tribe, language and nation will gaze on their bodies and refuse them burial. (Rev 11:9)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 11 But after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood on their feet, and terror struck those who saw them. (Rev 11:11)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 12 Then they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” And they went up to heaven in a cloud, while their enemies looked on. (Rev 11:12)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 13 At that very hour there was a severe earthquake and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven. 14 The second woe has passed; the third woe is coming soon. (Rev 11:13-14)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” Christ told His disciples not to be deceived by the world’s perception of various events.

“Short-Lived Sorrow” Believer’s Have Short-Lived Sorrow.
The disciples would be like sheep without a shepherd. Luke 24:13-35 The temporary sorrow would be changed into permanent joy.

“Short-Lived Sorrow” The crucifixion of Christ was the greatest crime that was ever committed, and yet it was the one event that would bring the believer the greatest joy and blessing.

“Short-Lived Sorrow” Conclusion
The disciples were beginning to understand what Christ was teaching them. Yet Christ knew that they couldn’t fully comprehend what was about to happen.

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:16-33)

“Short-Lived Sorrow” 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Cor 4:17-18)
